South Africa-based. Livelihoods and resettlement expert in mining, agriculture and energy (former senior advisor to Yemen LNG and PNG LNG).

Rene is a resettlement and sustainable development specialist with 25 years’ international experience in developing and implementing sustainable development strategies and plans, resettlement action plans (RAP), livelihood restoration plans (LRP), strategic community investment and community development plans, RAP and LRP audits, and in assisting clients with compliance with lender safeguards.

Rene has worked in both the private (extractive industry) and public sector (South African Departments of Agriculture and Economic Development) on a full-time and consultancy basis. She has established Community Affairs units within companies and run stakeholder engagement processes, having successfully achieved FPIC.

In government Rene headed the South Africa Agribusiness Unit in the Department of Economic Development where she successfully facilitated the establishment of an agribusiness strategy and implemented a number of pilot projects in support of the strategy. A key skill across all sectors has been social impact and livelihood assessments undertaken to inform strategic community investment strategies and action plans. Rene’s work has required successful integration as a team member in multi-cultural groups, as well as leading and managing teams and projects.

Rene has worked across Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Recent projects include community development associated with the construction of Total’s Yemen LNG terminal; ExxonMobil’s Papua New Guinea LNG pipeline; and the planned expansion of Anglo American’s Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in South Africa. Rene has conducted land acquisition a close-out audit of a Livelihood Restoration Programme for ENI Ghana. She is based in South Africa and holds a BSc.Agric Plant Pathology & Horticulture from the University of Natal and a MBA from the University for Higher Education, Potchefstroom, South Africa. She is South African and is bilingual in English and Afrikaans and speaks conversational Zulu.
