James Hopkinson (OBE)

James is a security management specialist with a track record of formulating policy and strategy at the strategic and project level. An accomplished former British Army officer, his final post was as a Colonel in the UK Ministry of Defence’s Operations Directorate where he focused on Counter-Terrorism Strategy. He has operational experience from the Middle East and East Africa.

He has operated at Executive board level, both in the private and public sectors; including for international private security risk management companies before founding and managing his own boutique non-technical risk management consultancy, Assaye Risk. Their focus was on understanding the operating environment and assisting clients to operate successfully in those environments, regardless of complexity. He has worked extensively with extractives in Africa to ensure that security is not created in isolation of other aspects of sustainability but is properly integrated as a successful enabler to the business and wider local community.

Recent experience covers projects in high risk and complex environments delivering security and non-technical risk management services to enable market-entry, include risk assessment and due diligence through to operational design and direct management support to ensure successful operation by the client. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and holds a MA in Defence Studies fromn the University of Canberra, Australia and a MA (Hons) in Politics from the University of Edinburgh. He is based in the UK.
