World Energy Outlook – Public Acceptance of Nuclear Energy

Plexus contributed to the International Energy Agency’s 2014 World Energy Outlook (WEO), which incorporated all the latest data and developments to produce a comprehensive and authoritative analysis of medium- and longer-term energy trends, extending to 2040. It included strategic insights into their meaning for energy security, the economy and the environment. It covered oil, natural gas, coal, renewables and energy efficiency, along with updates on trends in energy-related CO2 emissions, fossil-fuel and renewable energy subsidies, and universal access to modern energy services.

Plexus prepared a chapter on public acceptance of nuclear energy. The chapter reviewed the evolution of public concerns related to nuclear energy in OECD and emerging jurisdictions and focused in particular on the role of public consultation and public awareness regarding nuclear power construction projects.

The chapter traced the role of public acceptance throughout the lifecycle of nuclear power, from the front-end nuclear fuel cycle through to decommissioning. It also addressed the role of risk, perception and public opinion in relation to nuclear power more generally. In addition, Plexus peer reviewed the WEO and advised on public consultation in energy policy planning, including in relation to nuclear energy.
