Influx Management Plan

The Mogalakwena Complex (MC), the biggest open-cast platinum mine in the world, is a priority asset in Anglo American’s portfolio. As part of its expansion plans, Anglo American contracted Plexus to carry out an influx management assessment to assist with understanding how site induced migration (SIM) and related risks can be prevented, mitigated, managed and monitored.

Deliverables

Plexus prepared a context review to assess potential SIM-related social and human rights impacts and risks to build an understanding of the nature and magnitude of existing and potential future SIM. This included case studies of comparable projects and a review of emerging trends in influx management.

Plexus also prepared a SIM Management Plan compliant with Anglo’s ‘Social Way’ and the requirements of applicable international standards. The objective was to inform MC’s project plans on land acquisition, local recruitment, resettlement and social investment so as to prevent and mitigate potential negative SIM impacts.

The project combined document review, staff interviews and geospatial analysis. The objective was to identify potential SIM hotspots and related spatial, demographic and migration trends and informed the forward stakeholder engagement process.

Outcomes

The context review provided the basis for the SIM Plan and helped to inform Anglo’s investment plans and approach to community development and resettlement. Particular attention was given to biodiversity, ecosystem services and climate change mitigation.
