Murray Jones is a graduate engineer with 30 years of international social and environmental risk management experience in the petroleum and mining industries. He provides hands on project experience to meet best practice requirements including consultation, working with indigenous peoples, Integrated Impact Assessment, including human rights, and Strategic Assessment and Planning. His focus is to manage business risks through early and on-going leadership to meet business needs, deliver successful projects and assist the client in adding value to societies in which they operate. He has a record of delivering the ‘social license to operate’ through management of lifecycle issues including social performance reviews, social risk assessment, designing to meet Free, Prior, Informed, Consent (FPIC) and strategic social investment.
Murray operates from Toronto focusing on social strategy, policy, risk assessment, business planning and implementation for a range of international clients. In all areas of activity he provides the ability to work successfully with communities, indigenous groups and NGOs. Prior to Shell, Jones worked for the Canadian and Dutch governments advising on EIA. He has since been HSE Manager at Shell Canada; senior environmental Advisor for Shell International in The Hague (during which time he-carried out numerous due diligence assignments on new leases and facilities; and HSE and Community Relations manager at Shell’s Camisea gas project in Peru (1996-1998). Following this, he developed a new position in Shell focused on integrating business, environment and social performance. He is an internationally-respected pioneer in inter-industry and stakeholder dialogue. Murray Jones holds an MA in Environmental Engineering from the University of Western Ontario and a B.Eng from Carleton University.
