expert HSE and sustainability issue management and advocacy, social conflict management, alternative dispute settlement; lawyer and formerly senior legal counsel, Shell International
Key skills/ experience:
Janine was Senior Legal Counsel, Shell International from 2002-2009. Prior to this, she worked in Shell operating companies in Canada and Australia. She brings extensive corporate experience in EHS/SD issue and advocacy management, including development, coordination and implementation of non-technical risk identification and ranking processes, best practice proactive prevention and reactive response techniques, and “lessons learned process improvements”.
She has worked with global experts and business teams at sites worldwide to earn and maintain critical stakeholder support in politically, culturally and legally challenging environments, including those with complex supply chains and business models. She has strong international experience with community environmental health and safety concerns, NGO activism and collaboration, regulatory engagement, communications best practice, trust building and risk perception. She also has specialist experience in the complaint process under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and expectation/promise/delivery gap analysis and management prompted in part by the recent proliferation of international voluntary standards (soft law).
A non-practicing barrister and solicitor, Janine uses her legal background to build bridges and shared understanding of risks and opportunities between legal and non-legal advisors at corporate and project levels. She works with legal advisors on request but does not provide legal advice.
