Key skills/ experience:
David Richards has 15 years experience in corporate and operations environmental management. For the past 10 years he was a senior member of Rio Tinto’s global corporate Health Safety & Environment Department with responsibilities in the areas of policy development, corporate HSE assurance and external engagement. From 2006 – 2007 he was Chief Advisor on HSE. He was seconded for 2 years to a JV responsible for overall management of environmental projects contributing to an EIA and permit and spent 3 years in the corporate Environmental Affairs group of RTZ.
He has 17 years experience in underground mine geology in Cornwall, Saudi Arabia and Portugal. He was Chief Geologist for the last 10 of those years with responsibilities in the areas of resource estimation, technical management and project evaluation. He led the development of strategic corporate environmental policy in Rio Tinto and headed the development of Rio Tinto’s Biodiversity Strategy. From 2002 – 2004 he was the inaugural chair of ICMM’s Biodiversity Task Force where he was engaged in external engagement, policy development and trust building. He also contributed to the Millennium Ecosystems Assessment Business Synthesis Report and lead over 20 HSE strategic risk reviews of Rio Tinto’s businesses. David holds a Bsc (Hons) Mining Geology from Imperial College and an MPhil Environmental Geochemistry from Liverpool University.
